Cleaning Tip: Shining Glassware

by Kim on November 22, 2011

in All Tips, Cleaning, Kitchen

Looking at this glass, you would probably guess it hasn’t been washed in a while.  Right?  Wrong!  This is how my glasses look after I run them through the dishwasher.  I even scrub them beforehand, but it doesn’t seem to help the cloudiness or the hard water stains.  With Thanksgiving just 2 days away, I thought I would share a tip on how to shine glassware for those of you hosting a big dinner!  Nobody’s going to be drinking from mine this year as we are headed to my Grandma’s, but they needed it nonetheless.
Shine glassware by adding a cup of vinegar to your dishwater. Let glasses soak for 15-20 minutes. Scrub clean! Dry with a soft cloth.

Found you through Kerrye over at Impossible Cleanliness. I was just reading someplace that if you put vinegar in the little rinse-hole-plug-thingy in your dishwasher it will do the same thing. I don’t know if it would happen right away or not, if that’s a build up on your glasses… Do your stainless steel pots come out milky looking too? – Like mine? I still have that rinsey stuff left… but I’m planning on trying the vinegar when it’s gone.

This is because they have removed phosphates from Dishwasher powder. Finish tablets rated highest for cleaning without phosphates. I haven’t tired them yet. Cascade tablets finally removed the film from my dishes.

I work as a tech specialist for Sears and it’s true what they say about white vinegar. I always tell my customers to try washing an empty load with 2 cups of white vinegar to clean out hard water stains and soap scum. You can do this in your washer too or on a paper towel to remove pen from your dryer tub! Without phosphates in dishwasher detergents it just doesn’t clean as well and leaves behind a lot more residue.

Don’t buy “Jet-dry” or a rinse aid for the dishwasher….. I always fill the reservoir with
distilled white vinegar. Instant sparkle, no detergent or hard water build-up (and I know about hard water in Colorado…lol, and keeps the dishwasher from smelling and helps reduce bacteria. Cut back a little on the detergent also…you really don’t need to fill the whole compartment with the dishwasher soap—you just need to be sure you stack dishes where they can all get the spray, and run the cycle accordingly for how dirty your dishes are when you put them in, (fresh, old/hard & dried on….). If the kids or family have been sick, u can drop 1/2 tsp. of bleach in the end of the wash cycle or 1st of the rinse cycle to be sure those flu germs are gone! I swear all the new chemicals like dishwasher detergent and rinse aids, and fillers, etc., they put in everything to max profit for themselves just gives us cancer!!! What did our Mom’s use years ago???
