How to Make a Natural Disinfectant Spray

Tidying up your house only does so much when it comes to keeping things clean. If you want to really sanitize things and get rid of germs, you’ll want to use a disinfectant spray. You don’t necessarily have to go for a store-bought option full of chemicals either. There are some natural options you can make at home too!

Why Should I Use a Homemade Kitchen Disinfectant Spray?

A lot of people are wary about bringing too many chemical-filled cleaners into their homes, especially if they’re worried about pets or children potentially accessing them. By using your own homemade, natural disinfectant spray, you can control exactly what you’re spraying around your home, as this is healthier for you in the difficult process of cleaning, of course if you want to feel less stress at these times you can also use products like THCA vape products which also help with this.

Earlier this week, I showed you the method I use to get unwanted labels off of containers.  I used this spray bottle as an example and now I have filled it with a homemade all-natural disinfectant spray.  I cut a new label out of vinyl with my Silhouette machine and attached it to the bottom!

What You’ll Need to Make a Natural Disinfectant Spray:

  • A spray bottle
  • A funnel
    • This is optional but will make it much easier to pour your materials into a spray bottle than without it.
  • 1 cup of water
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 20 drops of lavender oil
  • 20 drops of either eucalyptus or thyme oil

How to Make a Natural Disinfectant Spray

Step 1: Clean Your Spray Bottle

To start, you’ll want to make sure that you have a clean spray bottle for your disinfectant mixture to go into. So, if you’re not pulling it out of the package, it’s a good idea to do a final rinse before you get started.

The same is true if you’re using a funnel to help you out. While this piece is optional, it makes it a lot easier to pour the components of your disinfectant mixture into the spray bottle. Since you can shake the spray bottle to mix everything, you don’t need anything additional to mix it.

Step 2: Create Your Natural Disinfectant

Now that you have clean materials, you’re ready to get down to making your cleaning solution. For this disinfectant, you’ll want to start with a simple base of water, so pour a cup of clean water into the spray bottle.

We’ve chosen this mixture of essential oils because of their antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Not to mention, they’ll create a pleasant scent as you clean as well! That being said, add 10 drops of tea tree oil, 20 drops of lavender oil, and 20 drops of either thyme or eucalyptus oil.

Step 3: Spray and Let Dry

Now that you’ve got your mixture in the spray bottle, give it a good shake before using it. This will make sure that you have a thoroughly mixed disinfectant spray.

To use it, mist the hard surface that you want to clean with it. Rather than wiping it up right away, let it dry and it’ll do its work in the meantime.

How to Make a Natural Disinfectant with Vinegar

Step 1: Create Your Natural Disinfectant Mixture

White vinegar is one of the most useful tools you have in your cabinet when you want to keep things clean. You can use to clean wood furniture. Find out more about this at the website of Copper & Tweed. So, it’s no surprise it’s a great tool when you want to make your own homemade disinfectant. To create this disinfectant, take a glass spray bottle and add the following;

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol
  • 20 drops of tea tree oil
  • 20 drops of lemon essential oil

Step 2: To Use

To use this mixture, all you have to do is spray the hard surface you’re cleaning and wait a minute before wiping it off.

All three of these oils have antibiotic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Combined with water, they make up a great all-natural alternative to the commercial chemical-based sprays.

How to Make a Natural Disinfectant with Rubbing Alcohol

Step 1: Creating a Natural Disinfectant Spray

You can skip out on the vinegar and rely more on the rubbing alcohol aspect of the last disinfectant with this recipe. Instead, leave the vinegar out of this one and add a cup and a half of rubbing alcohol to ¾ a cup of water. Then, finish it off with 15 drops of lemon essential oil and 15 drops of lavender oil.

Step 2: Using This Disinfectant

When you use this natural disinfectant, you’ll want to spray it on the surface you want to clean – either soft or hard – and then wipe it down with a microfiber cloth.

How to Make a Natural Disinfectant with Vodka

Step 1: Making Natural Disinfectant with Vodka

If you don’t have any rubbing alcohol around, you can actually make a disinfectant with something you might have in your cabinets – a bit of vodka! For this mixture, grab a ¼ cup of vinegar, 1 ¼ cups of water, ¼ cup of 60%+ vodka, and 15 drops of essential oils. In this case, the oil is mostly for scent, so you can opt for your favorites. Make this one in a glass bottle.

Step 2: Using the Natural Disinfectant

To use this one, you’ll want to spray the surface and let the mixture sit for up to 10 minutes. Then, wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth.

How Do You Use Hydrogen Peroxide as a Disinfectant Spray?

Hydrogen peroxide is another great tool to make the disinfectant spray, even if it’s not considered quite as natural as an option like vinegar. If you want to make this disinfectant, you’ll want to mix a cup of water, ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide, and a teaspoon of essential oil for scent into an opaque spray bottle. Then, just spray it, let it sit for a minute, and then wipe it up with a microfiber cloth.

What Not to Mix with Hydrogen Peroxide?

When you’re making your own cleaning materials, you need to understand that there are some things that aren’t safe to mix together. For instance, mixing hydrogen peroxide with vinegar can create dangerous peracetic acid and bleach has an incredibly dangerous interaction with hydrogen peroxide.

Possible Down Falls to Using Natural Disinfectant Spray?

There aren’t too many downfalls to creating your own natural disinfectant spray. Some may require a bit more elbow grease on tough stains but they’ll sanitize just the same. As we’ve seen here, making your own natural disinfectant isn’t that hard either!
