Remember how I was going to post every day in October as part of Nester’s 31 day challenge? Well, I made it to day 12. Haha. Then I took a week off to recover. Posting everyday is too much for me. So I gave it up. But, I’ve still got a few Fall activities that I’ll be sharing throughout the rest of the month, including today!
Fall Fever #13: Make a Halloween costume for Jayna
I decided to go handmade on Jayna’s costume this year and settled on a cute and colorful owl! I was originally going to make the entire thing out of felt, but after seeing a crocheted owl hat at a Bootique, I had to get one. Unfortunately they didn’t have Jayna’s size or one with colors that matched her feathers. So I contacted my friend Katelyn at CSC Inspirations and she whipped me one up in no time in just the right colors and size!
It is perfect! And I’m confident I like it much more than I would have the felt hat I’d thought up.
I drew inspiration for the body of the costume from Alphamom’s version, but instead of sewing the feathers onto a t-shirt, I sewed them onto felt. I used one of Jayna’s dresses for a pattern, laying it on top of the felt and then cutting around it so I had 2 separate pieces-a front and a back. I then sewed the pieces together along each side. Next came the tedious part! Cutting those feathers out seemed to take for-ev-er. I used nearly fifteen 8X10 sheets of felt. But alas I finished and was able to sew them on. This part went much quicker than the cutting. And to complete it, I sewed a button on each of the shoulders and cut a slit opposite.
An easy (but somewhat tiresome), handmade owl costume! We are all ready to go trick-or-treating now!
