While it may not be quite as convenient as lighting a candle, a simmer pot is a natural alternative that yields fragrances as powerful as scented candles, but without the potentially harmful chemicals. Yesterday I tried out the simmer pot method using a couple of cinnamon sticks, a tsp of whole cloves, an orange rind, and an apple peel. In a saucepan half full of water, I brought these ingredients to a boil and then simmered for a few hours.
The verdict: my house smelled of Fall! It reminded me of hot wassail. And while it’s not my absolute favorite smell in the world, I like it. So I put the pot in the fridge and am going to simmer it again today. You can do this for up to a week, just add water as needed!
I will be trying more of these simmer pot recipes in hopes that I do find an absolute favorite!
